Bhutan’s “Prince Charming” Wangchuck is to marry commoner Jetsun Pema, it has emerged.
Termed “Prince Charming” for his Elvis Presley looks, the Oxford-educated monarch of the Himalyan Kingdom has said the wedding will take place next year.
News reports say, the he young and dashing Bhutanese king on Friday announced his engagement to a commoner, sending his adoring subjects into rhapsody at the prospect of a grand wedding later this year in the last of the Himalayan kingdoms.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, termed “Prince Charming” for his Elvis Presley looks, smiled as he named his bride, a 21-year-old student at London’s Regents College, during his speech opening parliament.
“Her name is Jetsun Pema. While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character,” the 31-year-old Oxford-educated monarch told the gathered lawmakers. “I have decided that the wedding shall be later this year.”
People in the assembly tweeted the news and fought hard to maintain their manners and not clap, which would have been a breach of etiquette in Bhutan where traditional propriety does not permit public displays of happiness, witnesses said.

(星島日報報道)位於喜馬拉雅山下的南亞小國不丹周四舉行盛大慶典，慶祝「龍之王」旺楚克與較他年輕十歲的平民女子佩瑪大婚。婚禮以簡單古老佛教儀式舉行，舉國歡騰。旺楚克把皇冠戴上佩瑪頭上，象徵正式冊封她成為皇后。新娘略顯羞澀，緊張心情顯在臉上。
　　慶典於當地時間周四早上八時二十分開始，這是皇室星占家選擇的吉時，大婚儀式在舊都普那卡一座十七世紀古寺內舉行。三十一歲的旺楚克（Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck）戴上皇冠，穿?傳統皇室黃袍，披?黃色肩帶，步入寺廟庭院。他其後從黃金寶座上走下來，把一個較小的絲造錦緞皇冠戴上佩瑪（Jetsun Pema）頭上，象徵正式冊封她成為皇后。坐在國王身旁的佩瑪略顯羞澀，緊張心情顯在臉上。二十一歲的她，從此由平民搖身變成皇妃。
　　婚禮採古老佛教儀式進行，穿上鮮紅色袍子的僧侶列隊步入古寺，不停誦經和燒香。寺外也有歌手和小孩子打鼓高歌，航空公司派出機艙服務員載歌載舞，氣氛熱鬧。
　　一對新人站在一幅代表立國先祖的一百呎高繡帷前面，由不丹高僧主禮，帶領他們進行潔淨儀式。整個婚禮過程由電視台直播。旺楚克父親把五彩絲巾披在佩瑪身上，為她送上祝福。
　　旺楚克擁有英國牛津大學政治學碩士學位，他在三年前登基，為目前世上最年輕的國家元首。平民出身的佩瑪曾在印度受教育。兩人青梅竹馬，旺楚克十七歲時在一個家庭聚會中認識當時年僅七歲的佩瑪，當時他一見鍾情，向她下跪求婚。
　　這場皇室大婚沒有邀請其他國家元首和皇室成員出席。一名日本音樂人獲邀創作歌曲獻給不丹國王夫婦，曲名為「歡樂的唱和」（Happy Chant in Unity）。
　　婚禮之後接連幾天，國王伉儷預定前往不丹各地接受民眾祝福。不丹崇尚蛟龍，有「神龍之國」的稱謂。
　　由於不丹邊境城市日前發生兩宗神秘炸彈爆炸事件，當局採取嚴密保安措施。大批警員在寺外及附近地區戒備，截查來往車輛。
　　政府和皇室安排持續三天的慶祝活動，與全國七十萬民眾同樂，載歌載舞、飲酒作樂。不丹曾被選為全球最快樂的國家。國家快樂委員會首長蒂森特姆說：「有一點可以肯定的，我們的快樂指數不斷上升。
